Note: The first work is presented in two parts: part one with the first six ''letters'' and part two with the last 3 ''letters''. The second work was printed in Amsterdam chez Marc Michel Rey in 1769, with ''Cul de lampe'' at the end and the date 1862, avec privilege du Roi. The first white paper has a trace of shelf signature in blue pencil on the recto and an ancient ownership signature on the reverse. Between the first and second works there is certainly a blank sheet of paper. The rest of the conservation is splendid. The work ''Letters from the Mountain'' was written during Rousseau's stay in Switzerland, which the Author was forced to do due to the decree of the French Parliament which notified him of his arrest due to the outcry caused by the condemnation to the fire of the Opera ''Emile''. Attacked by the Swiss Pastors for his thoughts, he wrote the ''Letters'', in response to the ''Letters from the countryside'' of the Attorney General of the Geneva Council Tronchin who attacked him as a subverter of governments and religions. From the comparison of our copy ''Lettres...'' with that cataloged by the SBN with the same year of edition, a different numbering of the pages emerges, in particular the numbered pages of our copy are 348, while those of the SBN copy are 368. This leads us to believe that we are certainly in possession of a rare counterfeit.
