Note: His first poem, The Palingenesis, where in 10 lyrical cantos he condemns the corruption of the clergy and defends Luther's moralizing action, proposing the return of Christianity to original purity with the union of art and science. The success of the work (Verga was one of the first to congratulate) also echoes abroad (Victor Hugo is among the most significant admirers), while the municipality of Catania awards the author a gold medal and the minister Correnti calls him to teach Italian literature at the Catania university. He died in 1912 in Catania: over 150,000 people attended his funeral, with official representatives arriving from as far away as Tunis. Catania held mourning for three days. Despite this, due to the veto opposed by the ecclesiastical authorities, his body remained unburied for almost ten years in a warehouse in the municipal cemetery.
