Note: The reconstruction of that Val di Noto destroyed by the terrible earthquake that razed much of eastern Sicily to the ground in 1693 becomes, thanks to research that lasted for twenty years, a fascinating story.
Two French scholars, Liliane Dufour and Henri Raymond (authors of ''1693: Catania, rebirth of a city''), whilst maintaining the utmost scientific rigour, wanted to narrate as a sort of epic the events which marked the rebuilding which took place after a catastrophe of such vast dimensions that it is considered ''universal''. The events, soaked in blood and sweat, of the reconstruction of small and large cities - from Avola to Grammichele, from Noto to Ragusa, to Catania - outline an entirely Sicilian history in which it is highlighted - thanks also to the photographic documentation of Giuseppe Leone and the valuable and rare iconographic reproductions that enrich the volume - how the populations of Val di Noto were able to mobilize all their economic and human resources in a 'construction site' that covered an entire region and which, for grandeur and monumentality, has no equals in the world .
