This volume carries out a historical survey - not exhaustive, but exemplary, with the work of forty artists - through the generations of Sicilian intellectuals who have followed one another from 1945 to today, and who have contributed to the creation and greatness of contemporary Italian art . We start from the critical assumption that art in Sicily has experienced ideal moments linked to the different ''perception'' over time that its intellectuals and artists have had of Sicily. Three basic moments of this perception were thus identified: the ''ostentatious'' Sicily which corresponds to those generations who in their art intended to show the peculiarities of the island compared to the continent; the ''denied'' Sicily which instead belongs to those artists who considered it important to ''forget'' their own genius luci, in favor of an international language; and finally, the ''rediscovered'' Sicily of younger generations of artists, who believe, in the name of pervasive globalization, that the island's problems are not dissimilar to those of the rest of the world.
