Note: The Paraguayan war was the bloodiest of the 19th century: the Argentine painter Càndido Lòpez was its meticulous chronicler. He wanted to paint it as it had been in reality; nothing in his paintings had to be random. To achieve the feat he used his memory, his live sketches, his left hand (he had lost his right hand in battle). From the dust of the two major museums in Buenos Aires, an Argentine scholar, Marta Dujovne, has taken Lòpez's paintings and the war diary reproduced in this volume and added a biographical and critical study. Lòpez served in the ranks of the victors; son of the vanquished is the great Paraguayan writer Augusto Roa Bastos, who tells us about the last days of Paraguay and the death of the tyrant Solano Lòpez.
