Catara-Lettieri was born in Messina in 1809. He completed his first studies with Cristaudda, Cuppari, Aloisio and Pisapia, but it was Galluppi who developed his talent. After various adversities I began to publish some ''philosophical brochures'' in 1836, which received applause from Galluppi, Tedeschi and the press. Then he published the ''Dissertation on Sensism'' and the ''Philosophy slandered of materialism'' which were very well received by the periodical press and praised by Galluppi, by Mamiani in Paris and by Gioberti in Brussels. In 1847 he was appointed substitute professor at Chair of Philosophical Law in the Archbishop's Seminary of the Cistercian Monastery in the House of the Teatini. In 1848 he published the ''Praise of Freedom'' dedicated to Ruggiero Settimo and was President of the political club ''La Tribuna del Popolo''. He campaigned in the War of Independence in 1848 and was decorated with the Commemorative Medal. The ''Poligrafo'' of Palermo praised Catara's thoughts by publishing some of his dialogues in 1872, the year of publication of the second edition of his ''Introduction to moral philosophy and rational law'', a work highly praised by Italian and foreign philosophers . In 1865 he was appointed full professor of philosophy of law at the University of Messina, and finally dean of the legal faculty of the University of Messina. See Mira vol. I, page. 208; De Gubernatis ''Biographical dictionary of contemporary writers'', pag. 269-270.
