The Author, born in Bourges (France) in 1632, was a Jesuit and preacher, known for the eloquence he lavished on the sermons which he recited, it is said, with his eyes closed, with masterly theatricality. His rhetorical skills and his culture earned him the right to preach at court, so he was called ''king of preachers, preacher of kings''. He was considered the most Jansenist among the seventeenth-century members of the Society of Jesus. His brilliant rhetorical skills allowed him to modulate his speech according to the audience: Considered as the founder of Christian eloquence in France. His sermons have had numerous editions. The most famous one is perhaps the one dedicated to the Passion.'' See page 323 of volume IV - Entry taken from Wikipedia
