Syracuse today represents an exceptional phenomenon of continuity and interweaving of architectural languages: the astonishing succession of grafts and superimpositions from the Greek, medieval and baroque eras makes Piazza Duomo one of the richest and most fascinating palimpsests in the Mediterranean.
Almost as if it were a stone book, the urban system of the square reflects the choices and functions of power and society over the centuries.
At the end of this long process which can be considered concluded in the nineteenth century, an ''urban monument'' emerges, also seen through the rich iconographic set of the volume: the photographic images are accompanied by engravings and paintings by painters and travelers who, in the period of the Grand Tour, were seduced by this amazing stratification of many ''cities'' one on top of the other.
